Markham is writing Kate and telling her that Gerda volume has not been printed yet. He has written a second intro and enclosing it for approval. The volume has been selected and sent to the Poetry Society. He hopes that Mr Lowndes likes this volume as much as the others. The volume has an honored place.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
